The PhD, Education with a concentration in Interdisciplinary Studies for Professionals is intended for highly motivated professionals whose academic interests cannot be met within a single discipline currently offered by ODU. The concentration is designed to provide students with flexibility in developing an individualized program of study aligned with their workforce context and professional goals. This program will attract students seeking a practice-based doctoral degree focused on applying existing knowledge to real-world problems and advancing a field of practice. Admitted students will draw from coursework across two or more academic disciplines found in doctoral programs across ODU's academic colleges.
Admission
- A completed master’s degree in an appropriate discipline from a regionally accredited university
- A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8 and a minimum graduate GPA of 3.25 are recommended
- Three letters of reference from sources including employment supervisors and/or university faculty members able to speak to the applicant’s readiness for advanced graduate study
- Submission of a professional curriculum vitae. 10 years of professional experiences are preferred
- Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate courses and degrees completed
- Applicants whose native language is not English must submit a current score for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 600 (written) or 250 (computer-based)
- Statement of intent for study in the PhD program (limit 1,000 words). This statement should address the following:
- How will the completion of the doctoral program assist in achieving your professional career goals?
- How has your professional experience informed your current interest in entering an interdisciplinary doctoral program?
- Which academic disciplines at ODU would you like to explore as possible foundation for your doctoral study?

Program Continuance, Completion and Exit
Students must complete the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) modules during the first twelve graduate credit hours at Old Dominion University. For more information review the instructions at: https://www.odu.edu/impact/responsible-conduct-of-training.
To complete the program, students must fully comply with the curriculum and all requirements noted elsewhere in the University catalog for graduate students and within the Ph.D. in Education Handbook. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain these materials and adhere to program requirements.
